Is there an easy way to lose weight? "Easy" is, of course, a relative term. Obviously lifestyle changes are necessary if effective weight loss is to be achieved.

Weight gain is not the sole result of poor food choices but also of poor eating habits and negative lifestyle practices. This includes habits like eating late at night, favoring junk foods over more nutritious alternatives, or being addicted to fast food meals.

One problem with people who want to lose weight is that they have the misconception that healthy eating means consuming bland foods and small portions. It is this assumption that gives dieting a bad name, and cultivates the belief that weight loss is hard.

This is not entirely true, however, as there are many dietary choices which allow a wide range of alternatives while still adhering to solid nutritional principles. Healthy eating is all about the right proportion of nutrients and vitamins from various food groups. Thus the proper diet can be considered an easy way to lose weight in the sense that such a diet will be ultimately more satisfying.

Indeed some of the best food choices, such as fruits and vegetables, can be consumed in virtually unlimited quantities while at the same time promoting weight loss through the manipulation of the body's metabolic functions. So much for "small portions." Neither can such foods, when properly combined, be defined as "bland."

In addition to limiting one's diet to foods that promote overall health, another easy way to lose weight is for a person to keep a close eye on his calorie intake. The daily calorie needs of any individual will vary based on age, body build, and level of activity.

The idea is to not consume more calories on a daily basis than the body is capable of burning. Unused calories will be stored in the body in the form of fat, and the stored fat can add up in a hurry if you're not keeping track.

The basic rule of thumb is this: For every 600 calories subtracted from the daily requirement, an individual will lose one pound per week. If you're good with numbers and don't mind counting your calories then doing the calculations is a snap.

Easy way to lose weight = set a daily calorie goal based on the above formula and stick to it.

Remember what we said at the beginning of this article? Lifestyle changes are the key. Gimmicks or fad diets don't work because they are temporary fixes. The human body is marvelously engineered and will readily respond to positive changes in lifestyle. The problem is with the human psyche. We, being creatures of habit, tend to resist change.

In that sense there is no "easy way to lose weight," since any change requires us to get out of our comfort zone and embark on a new path. For those who are able to adapt to such change weight loss goals can certainly be achieved.
